BLACKY®, the professional projection shutter for theater, concert, stage and multimedia performance.

Nearly all video projectors still produce a grey spillover on the screen when it should really be black. BLACKY comes to the rescue. BLACKY is the mechanical DMX shutter to blackout unwanted projections.

BLACKY is used worldwide, from Shanghai over Australia, France, USA, Ireland, UK, Spain, Austria, Switzerland up to Germany.

We thank all participants of the photo contest 2012. Some images we have implemented into the page, all of them are shown in the photo gallery.

General

BLACKY, like all standard DMX devices, is fitted with a 5-pole XLR plug (IN) and a 5-pole XLR socket (THRU), and therefore can receive DMX512-A (DIN 56930-2) signals. BLACKY has no return path. Pins 4 and 5 serve the remote control. Should BLACKY be used in a DMX-system with a return path, the remote control function must be de-activated to avoid trouble with BLACKY or the return path.

Important

BLACKY is delivered from the manufacturer with remote control and DMX functionality, without a return path. For these applications, the motto "plug & pray" applies. For DMX devices with return path or in master-slave mode, the jumper setting inside the device must be appropriately configured. More information is found at the operating manuals page at this web site, and in all printed operating manuals. When using BLACKY on the fly, always secure the device with the belt supplied. When selecting the shutter, always choose the smallest one which covers the lens. This puts the least load on the servo. For all Series 1 devices (this can be recognized by the red DIP switch for the DMX address): after changing the DMX address, the device must be powered down (interrupt the power supply). The new address will be functional when power is restored.

Warranty / Repair / Take-back

If a part should prove defective within the two-year guarantee period, it will be replaced free of charge. Damage caused by use of the device for purposes other than that for which it was designed, or by rough handling, are not covered by the guarantee. We continue to offer repair service after expiry of the guarantee period; or, if you prefer, you may order the necessary parts and carry out any needed repairs yourself. In case you have multiple devices to repair or maintain, you may wish to order the Dr. BLACKY kit which contains everything you need. At the operating manuals page of this web site, you will find manuals for Series 1-3 devices, complete instructions for master-slave operation, shutter replacement, and general repairs.

If nothing works anymore: PLEASE DO NOT JUST PUT IT IN THE BIN!!! Please inform us briefly by email to: info@g-a-d.de and simply send the device back. We will send you an acknowledgement of receipt and dispose of it properly for you. The return address is:

VIA DMX

Attach the cable to “DMX in“ (in series, attach to “DMX thru“), attach the power supply, set address and opening angle as desired, secure the device with the belt, that’s it. BLACKY requires 1 (one) DMX channel. The shutter can be operated with a fader or with a switch (i.e. blackout).

VIA Remote Control

Connect the remote control cable (3m) to the “DMX in“ 5-pol XLR socket, connect the other end of the cable’s 3-pol XLR plug to the remote control, that’s it. Should the 3m cable prove too short, it can be extended up to a maximum of 100m by connecting a standard microphone cable from the cable end to the remote control.

VIA Switch Contact

A user-defined signal opens or closes a built-in relay. BLACKY receives a static, zero-potential signal from the relay. In this case, it is necessary to replace the µ-controller by a special controller. Three versions are available: “open when closed“, “open when open“, and “open or close at pulse“.

MASTER-SLAVE Operation

Multiple BLACKY devices can be operated using a single remote control. All shutters will open and close simultaneously. Alternatively, two groups of devices can be set to open and close their shutters alternately (one or the other group will always be open). This requires the jumper setting to be changed on each device (see operating manual Master-Slave).
